Quentão is a traditional Brazilian hot spiced drink, especially popular during the Festa Junina celebrations held in June. Its name means "big hot one," reflecting its warming character and rich combination of spices. Traditionally, Quentão is prepared with cachaça, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and citrus fruits, creating a distinctive sweet and spicy beverage with a comforting aroma.
This non-alcoholic version offers the same inviting combination of ginger, cinnamon, cloves, orange, and lemon without using alcohol. The ingredients are gently simmered to release their natural flavours, producing a fragrant drink that is perfect for cool evenings, festive gatherings, or winter celebrations. Serve it hot in small cups and enjoy its delicious Brazilian-inspired spiced flavour.
Cooking Method
- Prepare the Ingredients: Wash and slice the fresh ginger, orange, and lemon.
- Caramelise the Sugar: Place sugar in a saucepan over low heat and stir until it begins to melt and turn lightly golden.
- Add the Spices: Carefully add ginger, cinnamon sticks, and cloves. Stir gently to combine.
- Add Water: Slowly pour in the water and stir until the caramelised sugar dissolves completely.
- Add Citrus: Add orange slices and lemon juice to the saucepan.
- Simmer: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15–20 minutes to develop the flavours.
- Strain the Drink: Remove from heat and strain through a fine sieve to remove the spices and fruit pieces.
- Serve Hot: Pour into heatproof cups and garnish with a fresh orange slice or cinnamon stick.
